VOLUNTEERISM AND EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT
Our employees are the face and the heart of our organization.
They represent the best of what Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) is about. We’re committed to improving the health and well-being of our communities. One way we do this is by encouraging our employees to create important connections with local nonprofits. In 2017, over 2,500 employee volunteers lived our company’s purpose by serving more than 600 nonprofit organizations and donating more than 53,000 personal volunteer hours.
ADDRESSING FOOD INSECURITIES
Through more than 100 nonprofit community partners yearly, we support food sources, increase physical activity, manage or help stop diseases and promote safe environments.
In 2017 alone, BCBSIL employees helped distribute 62,050 pounds of food across the state through a partnership with 4 food banks and other key organizations to end food insecurity and remove barriers to adequate nutrition. Aside from food drives, employees supported many health-related events through the year from walks, runs, blood donation drives and more.
Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon
BCBSIL employees participate yearly in this day of service designed to raise awareness and encourage volunteerism around Chicago. In 2018, 350 volunteers helped enhance many Chicago public schools.
WITH OUR COMMUNITY
Meeting our community members where they live is customary to us. Our community outreach team takes part in hundreds of community events throughout the state. Whether it’s celebrating community parades , handing out health literacy at local festivals or our Care Van® giving immunizations, we’re always available to our members.
Our volunteers are also passionate about creating safe play spaces for children. In 2017, there were two playground spruce-ups with our partners at the Blue Island Park District and Marion Park District. Volunteers donated nearly 60 hours to help with these projects.
The BCBSIL mascot, Blue Bear, often makes appearances at these and many other events.
BCBSIL also encourages and supports staff members serving on the boards of 501(c)(3) organizations and offers matching dollars to organizations where employees log volunteer hours.
