Plan Networks

Health plans, like HMOs and PPOs, use certain groups of doctors, hospitals and other health care professionals. These are known as networks. The health care providers in each network offer a full range of covered services.

Before you choose a health plan, you may want to check if your doctor or hospital is in the network. We have networks in Chicago, Rockford and all around Illinois.

If you visit a doctor outside of your network, you may have to pay more for your care. In some cases, you may have to pay the whole bill.

BCBSIL Plans VS. Short-Term Plans

While you may have heard about short-term plans (also known as temporary plans), they may not provide many of the benefits our health plans provide. Here are some of the main coverage differences between the two:

Plan Features BCBSIL Plans Short-Term Plans1
Pre-existing conditions May not cover
Preventive services May not cover
Prescription drugs May not cover
Maternity care May not cover
Mental health services May not cover

To make sure you are covered, shop for a BCBSIL plan before Open Enrollment (OE) ends on Dec. 15.

Financial Assistance

You may be able to get help paying for health care coverage costs. This assistance is based on your income and family size:

  • Pay less on your monthly premium bill with a subsidy, also known as premium tax credit (PTC).
  • Spend less on out-of-pocket costs, like deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and prescriptions, with a cost-sharing reduction (CSR) on a silver level plan.

Preventive Care Services

Staying in touch with your doctor can help you focus on staying your healthiest. With the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health insurance plans must cover a range of preventive care services with no in-network, out-of-pocket costs. These services include certain screenings, immunizations, and other types of care, like:

  • Blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol tests
  • Cancer tests, such as mammograms and colonoscopies
  • Help to stop smoking, lose weight or fight depression

You may pay more for your care if you visit a doctor outside of your network. You can find in-network doctors and hospitals using our online Provider Finder®.

24/7 Non-Emergency Support

Here are three ways you can find and get non-emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week:

Prescription Drug Coverage

You may get help with paying for your prescription drugs. Based on your health plan, you may either pay a set amount (copayment) or a percentage (coinsurance) of your drug costs. Check your prescription plan for your costs.

Your prescription drug coverage has:

  • A broad pharmacy network
  • Mail order
  • Online tools for handling your prescriptions
  • A drug list
  • Other pharmacy benefits (based on your plan)
